End of an Era

At 6 and 8, I think we've reached the end of the Santa Claus era in our house. Yes, I think this will be the last year Santa visits. I have my suspicions that they opened a bag or two before they came down to tell us that they were awake. It's not the peeking that bothers me, it's the bad covering up. And the selfishness and end of the magic.

I might regret not dragging this out longer, but for the moment I think I'm ok with letting go. I'd rather have something genuinely wonderful than a shadow of what used to be. I'll start looking up new traditions to begin our next leg of our journey together. Maybe we can volunteer at a food pantry or pick a family service project. Put the focus back on the meaning of the season. Something more reflective of the life of the man we are celebrating.

  1. Wow, 6 and 8 just seems young to have lost the magic, doesn't it? I suppose, though, that our kids are exposed to so much more than we were at the same age. It's that exposure, no doubt, that tarnishes the magic. That and the fact that kids, my kids included, are so much more pragmatic. They live in the "real world" which makes it just that much harder to keep any illusion alive.

I like the idea of starting a new tradition. We always buy toys and donate them to the fire station for Toys for Tots. It's my way to remind the kids that there are so many that have less than we do. And now, each year, they remind me that we need to do this. It's not a lot, I'll grant you, but it's something.

Here's to another Holiday season past. Enjoy the time with the girls. They grow up too fast, don't they?

  2. It's a constant struggle to keep up with these two. I have a hard enough time fielding all the religious questions I get on a weekly basis, I'm afraid that maybe I'm just too exhausted to perform mental acrobats when it comes to the Santa Inquisition. This year I started giving more emotional answers like "Santa lives in our hearts".

We'll just have to make our magic another way.
